Hooray for a (successful) Super Bowl ad that promoted health and fitness... even if the main character was a dog! Last year, we wrote a blog asking for just this!

Beyond a good laugh, here are some messages we hope you took away from Volkswagen's "Working Out Like a Dog" ad:

  • An external motivator, or inspiration (like being able to chase a VW bug) can jumpstart your healthy eating and physical activity program.
  • You don't have to join a gym to get fit. Run up and down stairs and chase balls, or consider buying fitness equipment (stability ball, weights, cardio) for your home. Convenience is key.
  • Surf the urge. Just like the pieces of food falling next to the dog's mouth, we are tempted by tasty treats everywhere we go. Continually remind yourself of your health goals and say "no" to temptations or find a healthier alternative (like taking a walk after dinner instead of your typical "dessert on the couch" routine).
  • Change, and weight loss, don't happen overnight. It takes time to establish new routines. Small changes over time (winter, spring and summer for the dog) lead to big results.
  • Celebrate your successes. Smile at yourself in the mirror at the end of a healthy day. Reward weight loss with a new pair of pants. Find a supportive friend to share your successes with.

Tell us about your inspiration for a healthier lifestyle. Who/what is motivating you to make a change?
